Surface pattern design

After a foray into photography over the summer, I also tried my hand at surface pattern design (hence why I went a little quiet during August!)

I completed Module 1 of The Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design e-course, run by UK designer Rachael Taylor. The first module was largely about the actual creation of pattern designs, which is exactly what I wanted to learn more about. Having entered a few Tigerprint competitions in the past, I often felt my designs were quite flat and too repetitive compared to entries submitted by winners and runners up (which often incorporated hand-generated elements and therefore had lots more personality), and so I wanted to develop my design abilities in this area.

I have already had a LITTLE (!) success since completing the course - one of my designs for the Tigerprint "Shapes as Pattern" competition was shortlisted (fair enough it only made the top 100, but considering they received over 1000 entries I was pretty pleased with this!); but the main thing I've taken from the course is that I feel so much more confident and comfortable regarding how to come up with ideas for patterns - where to find inspiration and how to turn this into motifs, and then how to create the actual pattern.

I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed the course and am looking forward to my surface pattern design journey moving forward.

Entry into Tigerprint "Shapes as Pattern" competition - reached top 100!

Caught you!

Catch up!

A few days in Cornwall & my photo blog goes to pot! Some great shots from the coast though - from top we have the Tamar Bridge, Looe, Polperro (including the gorgeous turquoise rock on the beach there), Fowey & it's brilliant Lifebuoy Cafe and finally the beautiful, coloured-vein rocks found on Seaton beach <3
